Redecorating with Wallpaper: Can You Paint Over it?

FCI Painting Tips for Decorating with Wallpaper

Looking for an easy way to modernize your dated home décor? Consider getting some new paint on those walls. Wallpaper that was the height of elegance 15 years ago is only dragging down your style aesthetic today, so opting for a fresh coat of paint will go a long ways towards transforming your space. But is taking down wallpaper worth the effort? Most people dread the idea of spending hours stripping old wallpaper off their walls, so they delay home improvement projects for years on end. However, this is hardly necessary. Prepping wallpaper to paint over it is possible, so long as you take the time to do it right.

You Can Paint Wallpaper, But Strip When You Can

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always a décor faux pas to paint over wallpaper. Sometimes, it even makes sense. Not only can painting over wallpaper save you money and hours of prep work, it’s sometimes a smart choice for the durability of your walls. However, most homeowners shouldn’t paint over their wallpaper, so keep reading to learn if layering paint onto preexisting paper is a smart choice for your situation.

You should always attempt to strip your wallpaper before deciding to paint over it. The reasons for this are simple. First, paint usually looks better when put on a stripped wall. Otherwise, you risk seams from the wallpaper showing though, and raised designs may be emphasized with a coat of paint. Painting over wallpaper may also pose problems in the long run, as peeling paper will take your paint job off with it too and make frequent touchups a necessity. This means that it’s important to strip your paper before painting when you can, as the process of stripping painted over wallpaper is much more difficult.

When to Paint Over Wallpaper

Sometimes, stripping wallpaper won’t work for your walls. If any of the following conditions describe your home, you might be better off painting over your paper instead.

    • Too many paper layers: If your walls have multiple layers of paper on them, stripping off every layer yourself might be impossible and leave the walls an uneven texture in the process.
    • Minimal Time: Stripping wallpaper can be a drag, so if you’re on a tight renovation schedule, painting over the paper is a time saving option.
    • Crumbling drywall:  Taking wallpaper off drywall sometimes leaves it damaged and crumbling, so keeping it in place on older walls will ensure they stay intact.

How to Paint Over Wallpaper

If you decide to paint over your wallpaper, it is crucial that you carefully prepare your walls to prevent the result from looking shabby. Look over your walls, remove any loose paper in sight, and restore damage spots from nail holes. By taking the time to get your wall is as smooth as possible, you will get the best result.

Next, add a thin line of clear caulk around the edges of your wall, paying special attention to the places were the paper meets the floor and ceiling. This seals the edges and prevents the paper from peeling after it’s been painted.

After the wallpaper is secured, cover it in a coat of oil-based primer. This seals the adhesive in the paper and keeps it away from the moisture in the paint, which is otherwise likely to cause it to bubble or peel.

Once the primer is fully dry, inspect for gaps in the wallpaper seams these may need to be skimmed with drywall compound, sanded and re primed then you can paint your walls like normal.

The Difference Between an Amateur and a Professional Painter

It is a common for a homeowner to look at the new paint job on their home and think “I could have done that.”  With the right tools, years of experience and effort, you could approximate the quality of a professional painter, but it is surprisingly difficult. When you hire a first class house painting company, you are hiring specialized equipment and expertise that can be the difference between an acceptable job and a work of art.

The foremost difference between professional painters and weekend do-it-yourselfers is the care and precision that goes into preparing the painting surface.  Most DIYers jump ahead to the actual painting without cleaning, stripping and priming the surface.  High quality painters will actually spend the majority of the time prepping the surface by using repairing imperfections, smoothing rough areas or pressure washing. Amateur painters fail to realize that a well-prepared surface will not only adhere the paint for a longer period of time, but will also produce a more aesthetically pleasing result.

Professionals are unwilling to sacrifice quality for a few dollars.  Many amateurs will often substitute cheaper materials in an effort to save a little money, but professionals understand that the right materials provide that little extra in quality which will elevate the project. For example, many people unknowingly use masking tape instead of painter’s tape, without realizing that painter’s tape provides sharper edges to the final result.  Trust a professional to know the difference between a cost saving and a reduction in quality.

Another important consideration is the cost savings of hiring a professional.  There is some critical equipment that most DIYers do not purchase—or purchase the wrong kind—that a professional knows is essential for a first rate job.  These include top-tier paints, primers, tarps, paint scrapers, masks or goggles.  For an exterior painting, professionals will utilize pressure washers, sanders and scaffolding which can be very expensive for a one-time job.

Professionals are much more likely to safely complete a project than an amateur.  No paint project is worth a serious injury, so hiring experienced painters that are insured is almost always the right way to go for a sizable paint job. Even for small, interior paint jobs, it is wiser to hire skilled professionals; most injuries while painting involve falls from 2’-6’ stepladders.

The final issue you should consider prior to taking on a paint project yourself is the amount of time required. Most professional painting companies will use an entire team of specialists that can rapidly complete the project, producing minimal disruption to your family.  Not only will it take you considerably longer to complete the same job, you are likely to run into delays if you make a mistake or fail to properly plan the job.  During this extended period, your family and visitors will have to endure malodorous paint products, obstacles, and paint mishaps.

The Life of a Paintbrush

If you are preparing to paint your home or business, you want a new look that will POP! Part of producing a stunning, new look is working with first-rate materials.  You have probably given a lot of thought to the colors and types of paint you want to work with, but you should also carefully consider the paintbrushes you use.  With the right paintbrush, you can achieve a creamy, smooth texture that will appeal to the eye as well as the touch, and last for years.

Depending on the quality of your paintbrush, their lifespan can range from a few days up to three to four years! For the standard interior paint brush, there are two types of bristles: synthetic materials—like nylon or polyester—and natural hair.

The lifetime of a paintbrush often depends on the material the paintbrush is being used to spread. For example, the higher quality, natural bristle brushes work best when used with enamels or topcoats (these should never be used with latex-based paints). On the other hand, synthetic brushes will typically hold their shape better and can be used to paint with nearly any material.

While they may be expensive initially, we recommend premium polyester paintbrushes because, with proper care and maintenance, they will last an extended period of time.

Average Lifespan

  • Natural Brushes – Made with natural animal hair and used for applying oil-based paints, natural brushes can last 3-5 years with proper care.
  • Blended Synthetic Brushes – These brushes are easy to clean and maintain, especially when working with latex paint. These brushes are typically made of nylon and polyester, which offers premium durability and excellent shape retention. These brushes should last you 2-3 years with proper care.
  • Polyester Brushes – Ideally used with latex paint, these brushes will retain their stiffness and shape with almost every paint and will apply evenly and smoothly. With regular maintenance, these brushes should last 6 months to a year.

The lifespan of your paintbrush can be greatly extended with the proper care and maintenance, regardless of what kind of brush you use! We recommend using soap and water on latex brushes and mineral spirits on natural oil brushes.

Paintbrush Maintenance

Oil Paints

You should always make sure that you’re closely following the manufacturer’s instructions when cleaning your brushes. Typically, the instructions will ask you to use a specific cleaner or solvent. To clean with a solvent, you should pour it into a container that will easily accommodate the brush—a very clean, used paint can works well. After pouring it into your container, work the thinner throughout the bristles by dipping it in the container repeatedly until the excess paint has come off. If necessary, spin the brush a few times until no material remains on the bristles.

Latex Paints

Latex paints are less difficult to clean off. These paints can easily come off with a mixture of warm water and dish soap. Clean the brush by dipping it into the mixture and working the soapy water into the bristles with your hands, followed by a rinse of clear water. Repeat the process if necessary.

Tools & Gadgets

Paint Brush Comb

After you’ve washed your brushes, you may still find yourself with some dried paint on the bristles. This is where a brush comb comes in handy. The comb is especially useful because it allows you to carefully remove dried paint without damaging the bristles. Just a few strokes with a paint brush comb, and your brush will be virtually like new!

Brush Spinner

You should never leave your brush with water on it as it can cause your bristles to warp. A brush spinner is a great solution to this problem. Once you’re done cleaning and combing your brushes, toss them into the spinner for a perfect dry.

Control the Mood With Interior Paint Colors

A new coat of paint can be the change you need

Inspiration In A Can

There’s a science behind color combination that should cause you to ask yourself various questions.

What mood are you going for?

Do you want calming or are you trying to feel energized? Imagine if you walked into a restaurant and it was painted black instead of a vibrant red. The dark walls might make a person feel uncomfortable, whereas the vibrant red has the potential to create a lively and talkative ambiance. Keep in mind that no color is “bad”. By simply adding sheen to that same black paint, it can evoke a feeling of elegance and austerity.

Which color can achieve that mood?

Prepare to visualize! Everyone has different preference for colors, so finding out what works best for your home may take a few tries. You might want to choose a couple of color samples from your local paint or hardware store. You may be surprised at what works with your décor!

How do I decide on a shade?

Once you have a color picked out then you’re going to have to decide on which hue to use, how much saturation is needed, and which intensity will look the best in the room. This is when your local paint store comes in handy again. Take home a large selection of paint samples and decide which one will look best in your home. Don’t forget to see how they look in different types of lighting! However, this is when it gets tricky so don’t hesitate to use our professional knowledge to achieve your satisfaction. Sherwin-Williams offers a great paint sample option called Colors to Go that covers about 75sqft, so it’s great for testing colors!

Which color goes with what I want?

You’re either going to pair a color with one that creates contrast or cohesion. Contrast is using different colors in the same space to create visual attention, making a room seem livelier and encouraging the eye to roam. Cohesion will cause the room to flow and seem larger from room to room. We can help you create the right palette for any room if you find yourself needing help.
